Fort Greely Nuclear Decommissioning Progress and Richardson Highway Contingency Route

February 3, 2026 – The US Army is moving forward with the final dismantling of the former SM 1A nuclear power plant at Fort Greely near Delta Junction, Alaska. The plant ceased operations in 1968 and most radioactive waste was previously removed and shipped out of state. Additional components can now be safely dismantled as part of the ongoing decommissioning effort.

Material removed during this phase is being securely contained onsite and transported by truck to Fairbanks, then by rail to Whittier, barged to Seattle, and ultimately shipped to Texas for licensed final disposal.

The primary approved shipping route for large reactor components is through Anchorage. However, due to winter weather risks, the Richardson Highway south has been designated as a secondary approved route. This alternative would only be used if weather conditions temporarily prevent use of the primary route. If activated, shipments would move south on the Richardson Highway under strict security protocols.

This notice is intended to keep Copper Valley communities informed about potential transportation activity related to this project. Additional technical and historical background on the SM 1A facility and its decommissioning process is available in the Army’s project overview materials.
