Planning the Future of McCarthy Road: PEL Study Underway

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has launched the McCarthy Road Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study to explore long-term improvements for this vital 59-mile corridor between Chitina and McCarthy. Known for its scenic beauty and historical significance, McCarthy Road also faces challenges such as seasonal accessibility, maintenance issues, and safety concerns.

The PEL study aims to gather public input, assess environmental and engineering considerations, and identify potential solutions that balance transportation needs with the preservation of the region’s unique character. Community engagement is a key part of the process, with opportunities for residents and stakeholders to share feedback through surveys, meetings, and the project website.
